PACTOR

Part 1

The short answer

A Mode that transfers text, files, and some graphics, on HF, quickly and without error, between stations and into and out of the Internet.
Following is a short list of currently active stations and the frequencies they monitor, 24 hours a day. Chances are you will hear
Pactor in action. If no HF radio just listen to the audio file at the end of this article.
WB0TAX – Shreveport, LA
3636.9Khz, 7103.7Khz, 10143.7Khz, 14066.9Khz, 14096.2Khz, 18106.2Khz
K4SET – Murray, KY

This is just a sample. There are over 49 stations listed in the latest version of Airmail (software used by a lot of Pactor stations).
Pactor III will give you a throughput of close to 5200 bits per second. This is great when you consider RTTY is 45 to 60 bits per
second and HF Packet is only 300 bits per second. The best thing about Pactor is the fact you can sit in the parking lot
of Nuway (during times of disaster) and get traffic into and out of the Internet. Check out: http://www.airmail2000.com/pprimer.htm

Part 2

Some of the HF radios that I have found to work on pactor is:

Icom 706, 7000, 718

Yaesu FT 747, 1000, 857, 897, 450

Kenwood TS 50. 480

I'm sure there are others but theses are the ones I know.

Some of the TNC's (Terminal Node Controler) that will work pactor are:

Older ones

AEA PK 232 MBX (Along with the Heathkit DPK 232 MBX) - only works Packtor II

Kantronics XL (don't know much about this one) may only work Packtor I or II

MFJ 1278B (here again don't know a lot about this one) may only work Packtor I or II

SCS PTCe only works Pactor I or II but will work Pactor III with $145 firmware upgrade

(you may find these at Hamfests for under $300)

Timewave PK232/PSK (like the AEA PK232 - only Pactor II)

Timewave 900 (Pactor I only)

Timewave DSP 232 (know very little about this one)

Now for the newer Pactor TNC's (priced from $1,100 to $1,700 a piece)

SCS PTC IIex, PTC II Pro, PTC usb

You can not use a computer sound card to generate Pactor as Pactor III is proprietary. Anyone

who uses their technology has to pay a stiff user fee.

If you know of any that I have missed, let me know.

Also found some data about Pactor that may give you some insight into how well the different

modes work:

Pactor I - 200 baud

Pactor II - 800 baud

Pactor III - 3600 baud (I have seen this one stated from 1100 baud to 5600 baud)
